Ware County opened the 2022 softball season with a pair of road victories winning at Camden County and Bacon County.

The Lady Gators (2-0) blanked the homestanding Wildkittens 11-0 scoring in five of their six at bats in Wednesday’s (August 10) “mercy rule” matchup. Ware County escaped 2-1 Thursday afternoon in Alma against the Lady Red Raiders (1-1). Both wins spoiled the home openers of Camden County and Bacon County.

Ware County was scheduled to host Brantley County Monday afternoon and Camden County Tuesday. The Lady Gators travel Thursday, August 18 to face Cook High.

KINGSLAND — Erin Meeks tossed five innings of two-hit ball and Raygan Dixon had three hits, a homer and drove in three runs leading Ware County past the Wildkittens.

The Lady Gators scored the only run Meeks (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) would need in the first inning. They pushed home two runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and capped the game with a five-run sixth.

Mackenzie Trull, Cuylea Martin (two doubles, two RBI) and K.J. Joiner (two RBI) joined Dixon (double, homer) with multi-hit games collecting two hits apiece in th 14-hit attack. Aniston Delk, Annie Ray, Kate Howell, Tanley Hewett and Meeks added a hit apiece.

ALMA — Visiting Ware County made a two-run first inning stand in beating Bacon County.

The Lady Gators collected three of their five hits in the first inning against Cloe Pless (7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 2 HBP) scoring on a two-out, two-run single off the bat Martin (1-for-2).

Trull (1-for-3) kept the first inning alive line a two-out, 0-2 pitch to center. Delk (1-for-3) followed with a single. Both runners took and extra base on the relay throw. Martin stroked an 0-2 pitch up the middle plating Trull and Delk for the 2-0 lead.

The Lady Red Raiders scored their lone run in the bottom of the inning against Hewett (7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) on a two-out, first-pitch single of the bat of Halie Hand (2-for-3).

Ava Conner (1-for-3) drew a four-pitch, leadoff walk. After moving up on a groundout by Santana Green (1-for-4), Conner reached third on a single by Rily Andrews (1-for-2). Hand came through two batters later.

Pless retired eight consecutive batters before hitting Martin with one out in the fourth. Martin stole second and raced to third on Joiner’s sacrifice bunt ahead of the final out.

The Lady Gators put two runners on in the fifth after two outs with Dixon (1-for-3) reaching on an error and Meeks getting hit by a pitch. Joiner singled with two outs in the sixth and Dixon singled with two outs in the seventh.

Bacon County stranded runners at second and third in the third inning. Conner and Green opened the inning with consecutive singles with each taking an extra base on an error. Hewett escaped with a shallow fly ball, a strikeout and groundout.

The Lady Red Raiders stranded two runners in the fifth, and one in the sixth with Hand’s leadoff single.
